Blue Jay Roofing was founded in 2019 by Nelson Walter and his father in Alberta. The family later relocated to West Kelowna and now operates exclusively across the Okanagan — Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, and surrounding communities. What started as a two-person family crew has grown into a GAF Certified team completing 500+ roofing projects in the valley. We are not a franchise. We live, work, and answer the phone right here.

The story
How Blue Jay Roofing started
Blue Jay Roofing started the way most family businesses start — with one truck, a few tools, and a question: could we do this better than the contractors we'd worked for?
Nelson Walter had spent years on roofing and construction crews in Alberta. He knew what quality work looked like. He also knew how often homeowners got the runaround — vague estimates, surprise charges, materials swapped at the last minute, crews that didn't show up.
In 2019, Nelson and his father founded Blue Jay Roofing in Alberta. They later relocated to West Kelowna, British Columbia, and now serve the Okanagan exclusively — Kelowna, West Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, and surrounding communities. Neighbour referrals became the foundation of a local reputation. Word spread — partly because of the work, partly because of the way the work was done. Written estimates. Honest assessments. Crews that arrived on time. A magnetic nail sweep at the end of every job.
Seven years later, Blue Jay Roofing has completed 500+ projects across eight Okanagan cities. Nelson is still on the tools, his father still works alongside him, and the family is still based in West Kelowna. The crew has grown, but the operating principles haven't changed.

Blue Jay Roofing is led by Nelson Walter, who is on-site for most projects and personally inspects every completed roof. His father still works alongside him on installations. Nelson's wife Roxanna keeps the office running and is known to climb a roof or two when the crew needs help.
We are a small enough team that the people who quote your roof are the people who install it. The person who answers the phone is the person who shows up. That's how it has always worked and we don't plan to change it.
As one customer put it in a Google review: "Both Nelson and his Dad are involved in the installation. Even Roxanna, the wife is on the roof helping out." That's the kind of operation we run.
